The Hyundai brand, the South Korean automaker, has grown from humble beginnings in 1947 to become one of the largest and most successful car manufacturers in the world. Over its almost 80 year history, Hyundai has continuously evolved, innovated, and expanded to serve a global customer base, while still staying true to its core values of quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Founding of the Hyundai Brand in Post-War Korea

The Hyundai story began in 1947, when entrepreneur Chung Ju-Yung founded the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company in Seoul, South Korea. In the aftermath of the Korean War, Mr. Chung saw an opportunity to aid in the rebuilding of his country's infrastructure and industry. Hyundai's first major project was constructing a bridge over the Han River.

Expansion into Auto Manufacturing

In 1967, Mr. Chung took his company in a new direction by establishing the Hyundai Motor Company and beginning production of cars. The first Hyundai vehicle was the Hyundai Cortina, which was built in cooperation with Ford Motor Company. In 1975, Hyundai launched its first self-developed car, the Hyundai Pony. The Hyundai Pony was designed by Italdesign, an Italian design firm, and featured an engine from Mitsubishi Motors. It was a major milestone for the young automaker.

The 1980s saw rapid expansion for Hyundai both in its home market of South Korea and internationally. In 1986, Hyundai began exporting the Hyundai Excel to the United States, which was an immediate hit thanks to its affordability and excellent fuel efficiency. Auto buyers in the greater Cincinnati area, from Monroe to Harrison, quickly embraced these high-quality, value-packed Hyundai cars.

Did you know that the very first Hyundai dealership in the United States opened its doors right here in Cincinnati back in 1986? Since then, Hyundai has experienced tremendous growth and success in the U.S. market. We're proud to be part of that tradition at Jeff Wyler Superior Hyundai.

Becoming a Global Powerhouse

In the 1990s and 2000s, Hyundai experienced massive growth to become a major global automaker. Landmark models, like the Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Sonata, won over customers around the world with their combination of style, performance, safety, and value. In 1998, Hyundai merged with Kia Motors, further strengthening its market position.

Innovation has always been a core part of Hyundai's DNA. Over the years, Hyundai has pioneered many important innovations that have pushed the auto industry forward. For example, in 2005 Hyundai introduced the first car engine to be certified as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). In 2007, Hyundai unveiled the innovative Genesis rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan, entering the premium vehicle segment. The Hyundai brand continues to innovate with cutting-edge models featuring the latest in eco-friendly and autonomous driving technologies.

Continued Growth and Success

Today, the Hyundai brand is the world's third-largest vehicle manufacturer, with a full lineup of cars, SUVs, and EVs. In 2021, Hyundai sold over 3.89 million vehicles globally, and continues to win acclaim for safety, design, and customer satisfaction.
